How to Play Quota in Golf

Chase your own number — 36 minus your handicap — hole by hole.

What is Quota?

Quota is individual, not head-to-head: everyone chases their own target for the round. Your quota is 36 minus your self-reported handicap — a scratch player needs 36 points; no handicap on file counts as scratch.

Every hole scores points off that hole's par, with no strokes applied (the handicap is already baked into your target): eagle or better is 8, birdie 4, par 2, bogey 1, double bogey or worse 0. At the end, it's the gap between your points earned and your quota that matters, not any single hole.

How scoring works

  • Your quota is 36 minus your handicap.
  • No head-to-head — every player scores independently.
  • Points per hole vs. par: eagle+ 8, birdie 4, par 2, bogey 1, double bogey or worse 0.
  • Pairs settle once on the gap between their point totals and their own quota, at the stakes amount per point.

Scoring example

$1 a point. Alex plays to an 8 handicap; Sam plays to a 14.

PlayerHandicapQuotaPoints earned+/− quota
Alex82830+2
Sam142220−2

Alex finishes 2 points over quota; Sam finishes 2 points under. The gap between them is 4 points — at $1 a point, Sam owes Alex $4.
